Program description:
This workshop will provide an introduction to peer review for search specialists, with a focus on assisting colleagues in refining their work. The course will discuss peer review broadly and then focus on the practical function of reviewing electronic search strategies. Building on a recent systematic review and survey, participants will learn a structured reviewing technique that focuses on 7 evidence-based problem areas. Emphasis will be on achieving the right balance in the peer review. Ideally, peer reviewers will suggest useful improvements and help catch technical errors, while respecting differences in searching style, completing the review without spending an undue amount of time, and creating a positive experience for the reviewer and peer whose work in under consideration. Through this workshop, participants will learn which aspects of electronic search strategies have the greatest impact on search performance and will learn a structured, evidence-based method to provide peer review of search strategies for colleagues in their own or other organizations. At the end of this session, participants will understand the goals of peer review. Participants will identify the elements where their professional input can most improve the work being reviewed. Participants will be able to prioritize their time to provide meaningful feedback in a practical time-frame. Participants will explore the etiquette and ethics of peer review.
